Teaching a simulated fruit fly seven skills

Each skill (walk, turn, go to a spot, follow or flee a smell, seek or hide from light) has its own small brain driving a NeuroMechFly v2 fly body. Brains are trained by Evolution Strategies in a fast calibrated surrogate, then every round the best candidate is checked in full MuJoCo physics (FlyGym). The headline number is the held-out physics test: arenas that are never used to pick a brain.

Run the trained brains in your browser: move the fly and its target, silence neurons or an antenna, and download the weights.

Skills

Mastery is progressive: level 1 = 6 validation / 8 test arenas, level 2 = 12 / 16, level 3 = 24 / 32. A level passes at 100% / 100% / 95% physics validation and at least 95% in the surrogate. Optimal means level 3 is passed and the brain scores at least 90% on the 32 held-out test arenas. Validation arenas pick the brain; test arenas never do (they only decide when to stop). Success is strict: seeking skills must reach within 1.5 mm and stand still on the target, and escapes must gain 6 mm without first stepping toward the source.
